Allright, I have taken a fair amount of time in getting this ready but it was for good reason. The seating area was really dark and with the eyesight of a mole, at the best of times, I thought I was jotting notes only to find my pen wasn't working so this is pretty much off the cuff.
Since I have never reviewed OCW before, I am going to state this once and only once. I review based on my opinions. If you take issue with anything I say here, feel free to post a rebuttal or get a new line of work if you are that easilly offended.
Here we go.
Now when I first got to the venue I thought it looked like a great building. It had awesome parking and the location was easy to find. We got to the front and they had a barbeque going as I was to find out, because they didn't cook in the building so they did it outside. We got in and got our tickets and were told there was no alcohol at the venue due to it being a "FAMILY FRIENDLY" product. There it was. My Spirits sunk through the floor. I moped all the way up the stairs. This was gonna suck. As I got into the ringside area I was actually impressed. The lighting was awesome, the ring was beautiful and the ringside area was nice. It looked great but I was also told by someone who shall remain nameless "The production values are awesome ...but that is where it ends". I kept that in mind. We got a seat and the first thing I noticed was there was a ton of kids there. I kept fighting the feeling that this was gonna suck.
I went over to the merch table, as I always do, to see what they had. In my view, there are certain promotions who put over THE PROMOTION as opposed to the TALENT and that gets a bad mark in my books. There was merch for almost everyone who was on the card. It was very well set up and the prices were not ridiculous. But we have yet to get to the wrestling. The other thing I need to comment on is the canteen girl. I do not buy food at most shows as I have a severely strict diet but everyone I went with came back and commented on the outfit she was wearing. Apparently she was pretty smokin' so there is a plus. LOL.
Okay the ring announcer comes out. Here we go...... We are going to get told to keep it clean or we are going to be ejected. IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!!?? What the Hell!!?? Is a wrestling show actually allowing us to Police ourselves!!?? NO they wouldn't allow us to do that!! Would they?? They are !!! I hear angels!! Okay enough screwing around, on with the show.
We start off with the General Manager Adam Keaton coming out to hype the next show (May 29th, King of Kingston Tournament) and to Hype the main event. He tells everyone he has a cake made for the loser of the main event that says "So Lomg Sucker" Match 1 "Sugar" Shaun Mcmillan W? The Incredible Hunks and some chick (Didn't catch her name if anyone knows please add it) Vs The Shocker Decent opening match. Both guys were crisp and clean with their moves. A fairly good mis of high flying and technical but in my opinion Mcmillan was the workhorse in this one. He seems to be the more talented of the two by far. Good spots with a mix of wrestling for the grown ups and theatics for the kids. It was very old school like with a new school twist. It did it's job to get the crowd warmed up and not burn us out. Shocker wins when Deeno accidentally grabbed Shauns foot causing him to become distracted and walk right into a small package. 3.5/5
Match 2 Bull Mcguire Vs Mike Maniacal
Again, very old school feel to this. Very reminiscent of an old JYD Vs Jimmy Jack Funk Match with Mcguire playing the powerful face and Maniacal playing the screaming cowardly dirty heel. Maniacal had body hair that would make George Steele and A Train blush, it was gross. LOL. Both guys need a lot of polish. I have never seen either work before but they were not matched well in this. Moves were sloppy and poorly done. It was awkward at points and very choppy. It looked like they were both lost rather than they knew what they were doing. The only ntertaining spot was when Bull bealed Maniacal across the ring via two handfulls of chest hair. LMAO. It was awesome. Maniacal won after KO'ing Bull with a foreign object stuffed into his Arm Brace Ala Iron Mike Sharpe. Maniacal then stuffed the object into Bull's hand and when the ref saw it, he DQ'd Bull. As he left the ring, Bull was confronted by 5AM and persuaded to sign with them as the kids hearts broke. 1.5/5
Now it is at this point that I have to add there was a "VERY RURAL" old couple sitting in front of me who thought this was all real. They were analysing the guys and talking about the heels as if their families should be ashamed and stuff. LOL. It actually hightened my enjoyment listening to them. You will see why I bring this up later.
Match 3
Jae Rukin W/ "Charming" Chaz Lovely Vs The Hangman
I told everyone going into this that this was going to be my pick for match od the night. I hate being wrong. I have seen Rukin wrestle a couple of dozen times as he is a mainstay in Ottawa and I have seen him have one bad match and I was to find out later he was sick as a dog that night. Now I have to say two. I am not going to throw the blame on Jae though. I have never seen the Hangman wrestle before and I could go without seeing him again. I really could. He was either attempting moves he was not able to do properly or hadn't fully learned but he was weak looking on every kick and punch. He was slipping up on moves that he was attempting. He was He came up short on ninety percent of his areals and if he had not been working with someone as good as Jae and had they not had Chaz out there creating heat and making a distracting when needed, this match would be a lot worse. Hangman won via a modified TommyHawk 2/5
Match 4
The Incredible Hunks W/ "Sugar" Shaun and JD (I Think) VS Thomas Leeroy Cooter
I marked out when the Hunks came out. I have to as I love the gimmick. Then TLC came out and the only way I could describe this is, if Bash Bison and HillBilly Jim had a kid..... LOL. Now I can't see the Hunks having a bad match and as they started the match, I screamed "Kill Him Deeno" Only to have the "RURAL" couple in front of me turn around and rip me out because TLC is their son!! LOL I missed most of this match as I was being reamed out by rednecks and waiting for one to say "I Had a Purdy Mouth" and I was outta there!! LOL. It was a typical Hunks squash match, not great, not horrible, just ...a Hunks match. TLC won after what I think was a side slam after a miscue by the Hunks. Please correct me if I am wrong. I finally convinced them I didn't hate their boy. LOL. I thought that the job was done on this match. It built up TLC as a gentle giant and being he is.....ummm... RURAl and the fanbase is......RURAL, it worked. 2/5
After the match, Cheecky and Deeno had words and then, out of nowhere, Shaun Mcmillan nailed Deeno and the two remaining Hunks (Mcmillan and Cheeky) beat down Deeno until Cooter made the save and cleared the ring.
Match 5 to crown the OCW Womens Championship Persephone Vice Vs Holly Hilton
Persephone reminded me of a smaller scale Vanessa Kraven and was playing the moody brat character and Hilton was the babyface. If someone wrestled a match by themselves against a chair I would not comment as I have not seen them actually work. I will with hold comment on Persephone as A chair would have looked more convincing than what she was in the ring with. She looked good, Miss Hilton did, but if I wanted hot and no talent, I would watch Raw. I think Peersephone will get a better review next tie as for now, I am going to act like her opponent no showed to do her justice. .5/5 Persephone gets a 1/5 for not walking out. She won and they didn't have the belt there so ...yeah. Book her again so I can give her the credit I think she should get
Intermission.
Match 6 for the OCW Cruiserweight Title; if Taylor wins, he leaves 5Am. Taylor (C) Vs JC Manson W/Sak Daddy and 5AMThis match was a little confusing. I don't know the storylines which would have helped greatly but even the people around me seemed to be a shade confused at whether JC Manson was in 5Am or not so I dunno. Now when I think cruiserweights I thik X Division and I was kinda let down. This match was not the greatest match to have post inter mission. I would have put it opener in my opinion as it was sloppy , choppy and awkward. I found it not compelliing what so ever and just seemdd to drag. The shots looked weak and very soft and there was a piledriver that looked like Hell. I thought he )Manson) was going to have a broken neck. I think it was ended when Taylor hit a neckbreaker, again, if I am wrong correct me as my "Surrogate eyes" were in the bathroom. Winner and retaining champion Taylor who then ripped up his 5AM contract and was jumped by the rest of 5Am who then left. 2/5
Match 7 For the number one contendership to the Cruiserweight title "Charming" Chaz Lovely Vs C J Felony Vs James Cash
I knew of CJ going in. I knew of Chaz going in but James Cash I figured was a curtain jerker. I was wrong. In what was the match of the night BY FAR!! James Cash knew what the Hell he was doing, Chaz knew what he was doing , as did C J. WE HAVE A MATCH!! This was a typical three way match with the two heels teaming up on Cash and looking great doing it. Chaz and CJ should be a team as they executed double team moves to near perfection. I forgot a few times that Jae Rukin was on the outside, Chaz was crisp and clean with his moves and strong with his strikes and selling. CJ, same deal and Cash was amazing with the way he had all the kids freaking out and almost crying as he was getting beaten. It had a real Ricky Morton feeling to it. The heels teamed together until one of them went for the pin, then it broke down and we have a three way. Great match with felony pulling out the win to the chagrin of the fans. We have a new number one contender!! 4/5
Match 8
OCW Tag Team Title Match The Barbarians (MyZERY and Damien The Pitbull" Vachon Vs Tyler Tirva and Anthony Darko
Before I get into the match I am going to say something here of a personal nature. I find MYZERY fits the mold of the BABARIAN gimmick but I don't buy Vachon as a barbarian It just seems obsurd to me.
I had seen Myzery and Vachon in a Dark match in Ottawa and Mizery impressed me where as Damien kinda phoned it in at that show so I was waiting to see what happened in this one. The kids in the crowd were going nuts with the HUSS HUSS thing and it continued throughout the match. It kinda got annoying but MEH, they're kids and they were having fun. The Barbarians destroyed these kids. They beat the high holy hell out of them inside the ring and outside. They actually looked like Buzz Sawyer and Bruiser Brody incarnate!! Great Brawling match with the barbarians taking it to retain their titles. Crowd was rocking and ready for the main event 3.5/5
MAIN EVENT UNIFICATION MATCH WHERE THE LOSER MUST RETIRE Harley Davidson (OCW Inter-Provincial Champion) VS Jason Cage (OCW HEavyweight Champion)
This match was more of a knock down , drag out, bar brawl with both men fighting for their professional lives. Even though the crowd was solidly behind Cage, Harley faught back with fire but seemed to gas early, at points he could hardly stand up. It looked to me like something was really wrong. The match dragged and looked really bad. They went outside and brawled some more and when they came back in Harley seemed okay again and the match got better. Very hard hitting, with Cage missing a few spots and flubbing a few moves that he should have been able to hit in his sleep. Harley eventually pulled out the win and retired his friend as well as unified the titles. The two embraced and then turned their combined anger on Adam Keaton, who was around ringside , but we will get with that later. They beat him down and then nailed him with the cake that he himself had bought for the LOSER, and the LOSER got it.
The Good
This was a great show for what it was, which was a family friendly company. They combine the uniqe scenario of playing up the theatrics for the kids while not demeaning the grown ups in the crowd with ridiculous cheesy gimmicks. The action was great for the most part and mixed young talents with established stars. It is a great show for families and worth the trip from Ottawa. Considering there is a Check E Cheese and other activities in the area, it is a great family day. The admission price is cheap and there is no worry about foul language and other "ADULT SITUATIONS" A must see.
The Bad
The line between Talented wrestlers and Not so much is very noticable. You have some who could make a four star match wrestling with a mop and other who couldn't match the mops talent and it is VERY noticeable. I think putting better guys with better guys would enhance all of the talent. The commentators who were there with the cable company were so loud that you could hear them over the crowd which really took people out of the moment. Maybe put them further back or screen them off or something, just really bad mood killer. Managers, and I cannot stress this enough, You are not there to take the heat FROM your guys, you are there to enhance your guys. There were times during the main event when Adam Keaton was riling up ther crowd and taking away from the match THE MAIN EVENT!! but when Harley was injured and needed the distraction, he was quiet. Watch a Bobby Heenan tape and learn, for the love of God. Another issue, I saw Chaz, in his match do his cartwheel elbowdrop he does all the time, what happens?? Next match either Tirva or Darko does the exact same move. What happened to the code of watching matches and not taking other guys signatures?? If I was Chaz, I would have busted him in the mouth backstage. I mean it was the next Freaking match!! Not an hour later, like ten minutes!! REALLY!!
On a final note, I think everyone who goes to FAMILY FRIENDLY shows should give this one a look. It is a bit of a drive but like I said, if you make a day of it, maybe a picnic dinner, it is all in all a great time.
Oerall Show Rating 3/5
Please forgive any spelling errors as it is almost four in the morning and I have been writing emails and such all night. I will edit ti tomorrow.
